Played with Fitzroy reserves and Under 19s at the age of 17 before a serious knee injury ended his time at Fitzroy.
When he returned to football after 12 months out with his injury, Lionel played with Bentleigh in the Federal League under the tutelage of ex Essendon player Doug Bigelow.
He then played in the VFA with Camberwell being coached by former Hawthorn player Colin Campbell.
Lionel later served Murrumbeena in the South East Suburban League as Captain and Coach. He also played with Seymour in the Waranga North East League, Country Colleges in the VAFA and St Kilda City in the Southern League, which included another stint as Captain Coach. He returned to play with Murrumbeena before finally retiring as a player.
Lionel later coached Park Orchards JFC at Under 13, 15, and 17 levels. He also played and coached the Police Force team in mid-week games and took on the role of President of the Mid-Week League.
He is still a serving member of the Fitzroy/Brisbane Bears Past Players Committee and through his valued contribution and long serving support has been made a life member of that organisation.
